WikiLeaks PRESS RELEASE
On 9 April 2009 the locked Wikileaks.de domain without warning by the German registry DENIC.
The action follows two weeks for the search warrant at the German Theodor Domain Sponsor Reppe. The search was through the publication of the Australian censorship list triggered for the Internet. A spokesman for the competent Australian authorities ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) testified against over Australian journalist that they had not the German authorities asked for assistance.
debunked the publication of this list, the secret blocking many harmless sites, including others with political content, and influence the debate about censorship in Australia significantly. The proposal for mandatory internet censorship in Australia will be as a consequence of this debate is not likely confirmed by the Australian Senate.
On 25 March 2009, a day after the raid, the German government decided to attempt the introduction of a controversial and experts strongly criticized the nationwide censorship system for the Internet.
While the German authorities with the news magazine "Der Spiegel" about testifying against having the time of the raid never even heard of Wikileaks role as an internationally recognized press medium, is not this 'excuse' today longer valid. To date, two full weeks after the search, the authorities have received no contact to Wikileaks in order to clarify the facts.
The situation is reminiscent of a dispute between Wikileaks and Bank Julius Baer of Switzerland last year. Wikileaks published documents, tax evasion and the concealment of assets in the Cayman Islands uncovered. In the course of the dispute was the "wikileaks.org" domain blocked temporarily by a judge in California to an ex-parte hearing of the Bank. Wikileaks published further on alternative locations on the Internet, and after more than 20 renowned media and civil rights organization for inserting Wikileaks confessed, the judge his mistake publicly, and lifted the ban.
This time it is the German authorities, which try all the press because of an organization of hundreds of thousands of documents to close without contacting the editor at all. Contact information for Wikileaks are located on each side of the portal.
Wikileaks published more about the non-German domains. If the German initiative is successful in censoring the Internet is expected that these alternative domains are censored.
China - and now Germany - are the only countries in the world who try to censor an entire Wikileaks domain.
